The first book in the Mahu series is simply titled Mahu. The story is a personal one for Kimo as he is drawn to a gay bar in the city. It is here where he starts to accept the fact that he is indeed a gay man and tries to get away from the worries that he had with regards to hiding his true self. This book is a collection of stories by a master of deadpan wit and magical mockery. I do believe that Donald Barthelme was an excellent writer according to his qualifications, but I did not like this book at all. It made no sense to me. I kept reading hoping that soon I would understand the meaning of the book/5(6).

Mahu: Or the Material by Robert Pinget My rating: 1 of 5 stars. Well, I tried. Previously, I’ve liked Pinget. I read The Inquisitory which, despite being often confusing or obscure, was at least remarkable in setting and in country-house weirdness, and is something I’ve reread and kept on my shelf for future examinations.

"Mahu or: The Material," has been an enjoying and yet difficult book to read. It’s difficult to say if it brought any pleasure or enjoyment, to be honest.
It is a good book to say the least, but one cannot say that it is what would typically called a "Beach Read," or something someone would read for the sheer enjoyment and pleasure of reading it. Mahu or The Material was my first sampling of the inertia of his mind. A force so compelling that it took me several days before I got over the hump of his innovative style.
When I read his writing I felt I was constantly in motion, perhaps more so because he pushed the envelope of literary machination and mastication and the sort that would sort itself out even if it were messy and clumsy and unedited.4/5.

In his book of fantasised memoirs, Noa Noa, Gauguin relates a quasi-homosexual experience that he said inspired his painting Pape Moe (Mysterious Water)in which an androgynous young person is bending over to drink from a forest fact Gauguin’s Tahitian paintings would be very different and would seem much more arbitrary, without the strong presence of the mahu.
